Last night (December 8), Texas native Charley Crockett brought his refreshing take on country music to the late-night circuit as he performed his song “I’m Just A Clown” on Jimmy Kimmel Live. The robust track comes from Crockett’s latest album, The Man from Waco, which was released in September of this year. While Crockett’s approach to country music is far from conventional, his performance still carried with it the charm and musicianship that has become synonymous with the genre.

Crockett’s journey to this point in his career proves that his success is earned, not given. The musician started his career busking in New York City subways while also being the frontman of his band Trainrobbers. It wasn’t until 2015 when Crockett officially crashed onto the scene with his self-released debut, A Stolen Jewel, which went on to garner critical acclaim and introduce the world to Crockett’s unique blend of influences. He is able to melt together elements of blues, country, and soul music in order to achieve the complex sonics you hear on a song like “I’m Just A Clown”.

Crockett stood center stage in his full Texan uniform as he serenaded the audience with his baritone vocals. The backdrop of a mountainous region feels fitting as the arrangements of this song feel statuesque. He was joined by a full band that was able to recreate the textured arrangement of the studio version while still being able to keep an organic feel throughout their performance.

Crockett is currently wrapping his final shows of the year which include a string of homecoming shows throughout Texas. Next year’s touring schedule has the artist going overseas to Australia before he comes back to the states to support Tyler Childers for a few of his shows on his upcoming spring tour.
