With “Cheerios”, Florida DIY trio Kid2 brings a tightly executed garage rocker driven by thick guitar riffs and laid restrained vocals that, when combined, bring together classic elements of Yo La Tengo and Dinosaur Jr. The “live in one room” recording approach pays off on this track, showcasing an energetic live band and capturing an honest lo-fi sound that most computer programs only wish they could properly capture. Their album Embarrasing was released on Dec. 13.
We recorded drums, bass, and guitar in one room; and loud. The typical approach of isolating the instruments may have yielded a more pristine recording, but Kid2 as a group is anything but pristine. (hence the album title, Embarrassing) For the whole album, we leaned into the raw sound of bands that we grew up loving.
