The National are stirring the pot to kick off 2023. The band has started teasing their 9th LP via cryptic social media posts and the video posted to their Twitter today has been the most revealing of them all. The video features frontman Matt Berninger sitting at a piano with his back turned to the camera, a gentle piano melody wafts in and Beringer turns around to reveal his copy of the book Frankenstein in one hand and a mug in the other. The video was sent out with a link to the band’s website where it revealed a password encrypted unlocked by the phrase “EVIL FOREBODINGS” and what is behind the curtain has sent The National fanbase into a whirlwind.
Once you unlock the website it reveals a video that previews two new songs from the band. One is a continuation of the sweet piano ballad featured in the twitter post while the other turns the other direction with a more lively arrangement. The video the songs are set to features an open book that contains a letter to “Mrs. Bridgers”, seemingly referencing a Phoebe Bridgers feature on their upcoming LP9. The letter also references “Taylor” (assumingly Taylor Swift) and “Uncle Sufjan” (Sufjan Stevens). All of these references are on par with a leaked tracklist that appeared on Amazon this Monday under the pre-order for the new Belle & Sebastian album. The tracklist also lines up with the titles of some unreleased music The National began previewing on tour last year.
The upcoming LP will be the band’s first since 2019’s I Am Easy To Find and is following the band’s Bon Iver-featuring single “Weird Goodbyes” which was released last August. There are no further details on the album and the aforementioned tracklist has not been confirmed, although all signs are pointing to its legitimacy. Check out the social media post that started this all below.
