Katherine Paterson is a Dallas-based, indie-folk singer-songwriter. Her passion for writing songs as gifts for far-flung companions transformed into writing songs as companions for all kinds of life moments. Her debut EP, Bloom, wades through loss, heartbreak, and grief and emerges dizzy but standing on its own two feet.
“Bloom”, from Katherine Paterson, off the debut EP by the same name, is both lyrically and musically a heartfelt celebration of togetherness in spite of the circumstances. Recorded as a live take, the energy and joy of making music together again is palpable throughout the tight, organic performance, perfectly complimenting Paterson’s introspective, matter-of-fact lyrics exploring loss and reconciliation. The full EP is out January 13.
“I wrote “Bloom” in early 2021 within weeks of picking up a mandolin for the first time. When I finished it, I asked my musician friends that I was living with at the time to jam with me over the reel-like section at the end of the song. It was so special to be in a room with people making music after months of Covid isolation. That in-the-room togetherness and ecstasy was something I desperately wanted to preserve in the recording, so we tracked “Bloom” in my producer’s living room without a click track. I hope anyone who listens to “Bloom” feels the joy we had in bringing it to life,” says Paterson.
