Another gracefully chaotic track from one of Philadelphia’s hardest touring bands. Grocer is well known for their pop-aware songwriting with bouts of burn-it-all-down dissonance and layers of blissfully effect-driven guitars. On their new track “Downtown Side”, vocalist Nicholas Rahn paints a picture of an unfamiliar condition with strokes of humor, storytelling, and introspection. The rhythm section holds a strangely danceable, but manic groove with tastefully syncopated departures that’ll leave you wanting to repeat this one a few times. This is the first single off of their forthcoming EP “Scatter Plot”. Make sure to catch them on tour this spring.
“The lyrics of “Downtown Side” are about a condition I have called Vasovagal Syncope, in which certain triggers cause me to abruptly faint. The anxiety of this occurring ironically creates a second fear where I worry that at any given point in time, I am actually unconscious and simply experiencing a lifelike dream,” says Rahn.
