From the nature sounds at its intro right into the warm tape loop guitar “Silence, Memory” from Dash Hammerstein creates a theatrical soundscape that will wrap your mind in a sweet blanket of sound you might be ready to dive into for feature length. Truly, the song somehow transports you into a sort of Wes Anderson type of sonic world filled with whimsy as well as emotion and a certain amount of melancholy you just can’t help but drink up. This use of syncopated tape loops alongside tight live harmonies is a sound that deserves a little extra attention and maybe an extra spin for this track.
‘Silence, Memory’ is what happens when you see Memoria and buy a Tascam tape recorder in the same weekend. It’s the first single and opening track on the upcoming LP ‘Goodbye Old Horse’ (Dash’s 8th LP since 2016). The track – as well as the album writ large – is heavily influenced by the Brian’s (Eno and Wilson), fusing ever-decaying percussive and acoustic loops with sunny California melodies that build on each other up to a soaring crescendo. Also, slap bass.
