Caustic Commentary: Algiers, Shame, Sideshow, Okonski, Miss Grit & More

Here we are on another new music Friday and it seems like we have the best lineup of releases this month. Even though we’re exiting the shortest month of the year, it was packed with fresh music that made the time go by just a little slower. The last Friday of the month is bringing with it exciting new music from across the board including a slew of long-awaited LPs. 

It’s a rare moment when every release of the week sounds perfect as you enter the weekend. Check out our picks for the best new music of the week (Feb 20-24) below: 

Sideshow – 2MM (Feat. Valee)

DON’T JUST STAND THERE! 

Kicking off what is building up to be a breakout year for Sideshow, he drops off his first release of 2023. DON’T JUST STAND THERE is a quick, energetic project that embodies the diverse palette of Sideshow. “2MM” has the rapper flowing over a light-hearted instrumental with the muffled bars of Valee providing the hook. 

Unknown Mortal Orchestra – Nadja

With another peek into their upcoming LP, V, Unknown Mortal Orchestra releases the dream-like “Nadja”. The band’s new LP is set to release on March 17 via Jagjaguwar. The latest single combines moody falsettos with a sparse arrangement that combines to create a storm cloud of a track. 

Militarie Gun – Do It Faster

For their first single of 2023, the punk band more should know about Militarie Gun released a gritty new song. “Do It Faster” has the band letting out their frustration through blistering musicianship and throat-scratching vocals. 

Maxo – Face Of Stone 

Even God Has A Sense Of Humor 

The long-awaited third LP from the uncompromising rapper Maxo did not disappoint. The rapper navigates murky production and brings with him new flows and a more melodic approach to his vocals. “Face Of Stone” is one of the more rap-heavy tracks on the LP and has Maxo using his introspection to pen poetic verses. 

Miss Grit – Nothing’s Wrong

Coming off of her fantastic debut LP, out today, Miss Grit fits a beautiful ballad in the roller coaster of textures from the album. “Nothing’s Wrong” is the gorgeous slow-burner from the LP and sees Miss Grit gliding over sparse instrumentation with passion and ease. 

Shame – Alibis

Food for Worms

After a long wait, the new faces of punk rock, shame, finally released their third LP. The album has the band in a more mature light as they navigate their newfound fame with thrashing arrangements. “Alibis” is a fantastic stand-out from the LP as it has the band at the perfect tempo for their raspy vocals. 

Gorillaz – The Tired Influencer

Everyone’s favorite animated indie heads are back and they sound more at peace with themselves than ever. Cracker Island has the band dancing around lush arrangements and light-hearted melodies as they allow the concept of the LP to unfold all on its own. “The Tired Influencer” is one of the more ballad-centered pieces on the album as the wavey melody crashes over an unforgettable drum pattern. 

Okonski – Field Museum

The freshest release from the good people over at Colemine Records is an LP bursting with masterful jazz arrangements. Okonski’s debut LP features sparse instrumentation driven by somber piano chords. “Field Museum” has these piano chords swell up into a minimalist style of jazz that evokes a certain beauty in its simplicity. 

Algiers – A Good Man

Just when you thought you’d never hear from them again, the industrial hip-hop/punk group of Algiers release their fantastic new LP. The album is packed with complex textures and intense arrangements that are undefinable yet exciting. “A Good Man” has the band navigating a distorted wall of sound with intense vocal deliveries and ballistic melodies. 

Channel Tres – Big Time

Real Cultural Shit 

Channel Tres has been releasing short projects that encumber the artist’s love for bouncy tempos and house-style drum patterns. His latest project is no different, it’s bursting with colorful arrangements and danceable melodies that invoke a youthful feeling. “Big Time” features a warping instrumental with the baritone vocals of Tres somehow finding a place in this dense arrangement. 

U.S. Girls – Tux

Bless This Mess 

Coming off of their stellar new album, T.V. Girls is diving head first into disco. The sugary new album features head honcho Meghan Remy bringing her signature style of songwriting to glittery arrangements. “Tux” is a highlight from the freshly released LP, the song brings back classic disco tempos with a modern twist.
