CAUSTIC COMMENTARY: JPEGMAFIA X Danny Brown, Feist, Temples, Tinariwen, Mike Gordon & More

The weather is starting to get warmer and your sunshine playlist looks like it could use some updating after a long, tumultuous winter. While everyone was outside enjoying the beautiful weather, our favorite artists are still hard at work prepping soundtracks for those humid summer drives. It was a busy week across the board as fan-favorite bands made triumphant returns with full albums and newcomers prepared to release impactful albums.

Check out Glide’s picks for the best new music released this week:

JPEGMAFIA & Danny Brown – “Lean Beef Patty

Scaring The Hoes

After a long recording process, rappers Danny Brown and JPEGMAFIA are gearing up to release their full-length collaborative album. Scaring The Hoes is set to release on March 24 and the first single is more than we could’ve expected. “Lean Beef Patty” features an onslaught of hyper-pop-tinged production from JPEG himself as the two take turns dropping off verses fueled by pure electricity.

Initiate – “The Surface

Cerebral Circus

As the California hardcore band gears up to release their first album since 2018, they provide another sneak peek into the anticipated LP. Cerebral Circus is set to release next month and the latest single has everyone all the more excited “The Surface” goes much deeper than the name credits, the thrashing single features more throat-scratching vocals accompanied by a wall of sound that incorporates masterful musicianship.

Temples – “Afterlife

Exotico

The third single from the Exotico toes the line between danceable and spacious. “Afterlife” comes from Temples’ upcoming LP Exotico, out April 14 via ATO. The new single has the band using prancing piano chords to drive this sunshine-tinged single that is ready to soundtrack the incoming warm weather.

Tinariwen – “Tenere Den

Amatssou

The ever-entertaining traditional band known as Tinariwen is getting ready to release its latest LP. Amatssou is set to release on May 19 via Wedge and will have the band returning to the states for their first tour of the U.S. since 2019. “Tenere Den” blends the meticulously crafted arrangement with the crooning vocals perfectly as Tinariwen refuses to be boxed in.

Drugdealer – “Lip Service

Single

Coming off an impressive 2022 album that had the artist exploring a more soulful side of himself, Drugdealer graces us with a brand new single. “Lip Service” continues to see the artist explore new territories of his creativity as he crafts a perfect ode to classic rock.

Fly Anakin – “Suppression

Skinemaxxx (Side A)

As the Virginia native inches closer to the release of his Foisey-produced LP, Fly Anakin drops off another incredible single as if the excitement around the release wasn’t already at a fever pitch. Skinemaxxx (Side A) is due April 5 via Lex Records and follows up Anakin’s 2022 LP, Frank, which landed on multiple best-of-the-year lists, including Glide’s list. “Suppression” has Anakin spitting braggadocious lyrics with his signature gusto over a dusty instrumental with screeching horns.

Mike Gordon – “Tilting

Flying Games

The sixth studio album from the Phish bassist/co-founder is already gearing up to add the artist’s storied career. Flying Games is set to release on May 12 and the latest single from the LP has everyone anticipating what’s to come next. “Tilting” is a sinfully smooth track that features a slapping bassline and gruff vocals that glide over the otherworldly production of the song.

FEIST – “Borrow Trouble”

Multitudes

FEIST is making the most of this latest album rollout. With every single release, we learn more about the complexity of Multitudes, the artist’s first album since 2017, and “Borrow Trouble” continues to unravel that story.  The new single from the LP, which is set to be released on April 14 via Polydor, might be the best of the batch of singles we’ve received so far. A complex horn solo cuts through the lush production as FEIST croons about living on borrowed time.

M83 – “Sunny Boy

Fantasy

The day has finally arrived and the highly regarded band M83 has returned with a full-length LP. Fantasy hit the shelves today and features some incredible moments that add to the already storied discography of M83. “Sunny Boy” feels like a good summary for the album, bright production acts as a backdrop while the vocals push a narrative of confusing love. The juxtaposing topics over these colorful instrumentals make for the perfect start to the spring season.

Unknown Mortal Orchestra – “The Beach

Marking the first double album in the band’s discography, Unknown Mortal Orchestra pulled out all the stops for V. The album is out today on Jagjaguwar and features some of the band’s best songs to date. The spaciousness of “The Beach” sums up the sonic direction of the terrific new album, achieving so much with so little while still embedding their personalities and experiences into every note.
