Jesse Daniel Treats Sold-out Portland, OR Crowd to His Kind of Country (SHOW RECAP/PHOTOS)

Jesse Daniel and his band have been lighting up live music venues across the U.S. with honest country tunes rife with pedal steel guitar and plenty of telecaster twang. Daniel’s flavor of country is basted in the Bakersfield sound, and based on honest songwriting that’s both endearing and danceable. The current tour is in support of the release of a new live album, My Kind of Country – Live at the Catalyst, showcasing the much-praised live experience and recorded in Santa Cruz, California, were Daniel once worked as a stage hand.

On Wednesday, April 18, Daniel, flanked by fiancé and co-songwriter Jodi Lyford, and backed by bass, drums, pedal steel, and electric guitar, played a sold-out show at Portland, Oregon’s Mississippi Studios. Getting right down to business with an opening combo of “Big Fish” and “Soft Spot (For The Hard Stuff),” Daniel showed why he’s a rising star in the independent country music world. The audience was fully engaged for the full set, which featured songs from all three Daniel albums (2021’s Beyond These Walls, 2020’s Rollin’ On, and 2018’s self-titled debut) as well as a medley of Merle Haggard songs and some covers written by the likes of Mel Tillis and Don Rich.

Modern folk act Two Runner opened the show, and came out for the first song of Daniel’s three-song encore.

The Jesse Daniel U.S. tour continues through May, and August will find the band heading across the pond to play a French rodeo and country music festival, followed by a few dates in the U.K.
