After months of voting and online debate, the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame has announced 2023’s inductees. This year’s inductees include Kate Bush, Sheryl Crow, Missy Elliott, George Michael, Willie Nelson, Rage Against The Machine, The Spinners, DJ Kool Herc, Link Wray, Chaka Khan, Al Kooper, Bernie Taupin, and Don Cornelius. 2021 Inductee LL Cool J took to social media and Apple Music’s Beats 1 Radio to announce this year’s honorees. The induction ceremony will take place in Brooklyn’s Barclays Center on November 3.
Each year, more than 1,000 musicians and industry heads vote on the inductees, and can only be considered 25 years after they made their recording debut. The likes of A Tribe Called Quest, The White Stripes, and Joy Division were just a few legendary acts left off the list. The institution looks to include all genres with the inclusion of Hip-Hop pioneers DJ Kool Herc and Missy Elliott, the latter making the cut for the first year she was eligible for a nomination. Coming off a jam-packed weekend celebrating his 90th birthday, Willie Nelson finally gets his shine while the late George Michael gets properly cemented in history. Chaka Khan, Al Kooper, and Bernie Taupn will be awarded the Musical Excellence Award while guitarist Link Wray and the aforementioned innovator DJ Kool Herc will receive the Musical Influence Award. Soul Train host Don Cornelius will receive the Ahmet Ertegun Award, an honor given to non-performers for their dedication and support of music.
