On the outside, “In Your Head” from Vancouver Washington’s Cal Wilson may seem like an easily enjoyable modern indie rock tune with some Brit pop influence. That doesn’t sound like the kind of thing that would ruffle many feathers, but much to the contrary, Wilson’s whole songwriting process is a modern moral tongue twister. He has designed an AI co-writer to help him craft the words and music in his process. The end result is something really enjoyable, but overall a somewhat scary benchmark in the ever-changing and often terrifying world of AI. Not everything can be done with computers though. That’s why he brought in Seattle’s Heatwarmer to round out the full band sound. Purists will hate how much this song truly just sticks into your head from the first time.
“In Your Head” is a song about keeping your partner awake by writing and singing songs all night. It’s a song about obsession and about how our obsessions spill into the lives of those that make the choice to spend their time with us,” says Wilson.
