The plucky opening notes of Casey James Prestwood’s “Out of Place” will send you to a 40’s or 50’s mindset, but as the fiddle and steel enter into the mix you’ll be fully transported to the honky tonks and western dance halls of another time a place. With the opening lines “Well I think you know I love you babe, I feel to wild and strange/ If I could I’d take you out of town for a couple of days” calling and responding with a pedal steel; the song may seem like just another country love song, but there’s a depth to the story that comes out in the second verse, “Well I thought maybe I’d see you babe, I never knew I’d see you like that/ Stretched out in a bathtub your eyes are all rolled back.” Prestwood’s vocal control and range is impressive and smooth all on his own, but the kicker on this one is modern country powerhouse Sierra Ferrell adding a perfect tight harmony and tasteful callbacks and vocalization. I’d recommend keeping your eyes out for the whole album titled Where I’m Going is Where I’ve Always Been coming out June 17.
“I had really wanted to do something like a “Houston” vibe by the Gatlin Brothers, meets T-Rex , but all housed in a classic country shuffle format. My good buddy Josh Berwanger wrote the second verse, and our friend Sierra Ferrell laid down a lovely backing vocal track.(Ooo La La La) It’s an autobiographical dark story of a friend in the throes of an overdose,” says Prestwood.
