LISTEN: Sophie May Drops Tasteful & Sweet Folk Song Painting On “The Babysitter”

Sophie May creates a softly sung and soothing cascade of vignettes on her new single “The Babysitter.” Initially, it feels like some sort of lullaby rhythmically and melodically, but this is juxtaposed with the spiteful and somewhat sarcastic lyrics. May ends the second verse with the lines, “Six years on me baby didn’t mean a thing/ All my youth was wasted putting you to sleep.” The storytelling and poetry is understated and harsh in a way that evokes Dylan’s “Don’t Think Twice, It’s Alright.” Instrumentally, the song is simple, but really pulls the listener along with a steady strummed acoustic guitar, sparse upright bass, some wildly reverberated keyboard, and eventually a tasteful and brief electric guitar lead. Overall, a great tune to lull you to sleep at face value or justify your anger towards an immature partner.
