While the rest of 2023 has been nothing but prolific in terms of new music, this Friday feels extra special. This week’s list is nothing short of extraordinary, legendary artists are coming out of the woodwork to reinvigorate their legacy with a new chapter while a fresh cast of all-stars gears up to forge a legacy of their own. Across all genres, no fan base should feel unsatisfied with the number of exciting releases in 2023 and this week is proving exactly why. From soaring soul to muddy punk, Glide has shuffled through these new releases to pick some of your favorites.
Here are Glide’s picks for the best new music of the week;
Holy Hive – “Love It Is Not Love”
Big Crown Vaults, Vol. 3
The psychedelic folk of Holy Hive has become synonymous with the Big Crown label over the years. Big Crown Vaults, Vol. 3, which is set to be released on September 22, is a collection of unreleased material the band recorded while they were signed to Big Crown. “Love It Is Not Love” is our gentle lead single that features a slow-rocking tempo that switches on a dime, everything being driven by the hushed falsettos and groovy drum pockets.
Worriers – “Trust Your Gut”
Trust Your Gut
Worriers fans are having one of the best years possible for a fanbase. Coming off of their impressive Warm Blanket LP, which was released back in April, the band is gearing up for their second full length of the year. Trust Your Gut is set to be released on September 15 and its title track is welcoming us into this new era of Worriers. “Trust Your Gut” features muddy guitar riffs that slice through the chaotic arrangement, all supporting the lively melodies and fiery lyrics of the track.
Blonde Redhead – “Melody Experiment”
Sit Down for Dinner
The legendary Blonde Redhead is gearing up for their brand new LP and each single is only adding to our anticipation. “Melody Experiment” is exactly that, a veteran band challenging themselves to produce lush textures while allowing the track to switch moods and tempos naturally, making for one hell of a fuzz-rock tune. Sit Down For Dinner is set to be released on September 29.
Jeff Rosenstock – “Doubt”
Hellmode
Everyone’s favorite DIY punk is finally ready to grace us with a fresh set of brand-new songs. Hellmode is still months away with the album set to be released on September 1 via Polyvinyl, but the album’s latest single could keep us entertained for much longer. “Doubt” is infectious, to say the least, Rosenstock crafts a moody wall of guitars that sit comfortably under his almost cartoonish vocal delivery.
Pale Jay – “Dreaming In Slow Motion”
Bewilderment
Just when you thought the excitement for Pale Jay’s new album was at a fever pitch, the masked singer/producer delivers another reason to anticipate his upcoming release. “Dreaming In Slow Motion” is Pale Jay’s best song to date, a soaring string section closes out a slow-burning ballad that is driven by Jay’s natural sense of melody and intoxicating falsetto. Bewilderment is set to be released on August 18 via Karma Chief Records.
Ethan P. Flynn – “Abandon All Hope”
Abandon All Hope
Coming off of his highly impressive and criminally underappreciated 2022 album, Ethan P. Flynn is demanding your attention this time around. Their new album, Abandon All Hope will be released on October 6 with its title track ushering us into this new set of songs. “Abandon All Hope” is a bluesy rock single that moves like a boat on troubled waters, it has deep rhythms and unpredictable song structure making for a wildly impressive lead single.
High Pulp – “Unified Dakotas” (Feat. Jeff Parker)
Days in the Desert
We try to keep things diverse on this list and very few bands are producing such a vast range of music that every one of their releases ends up on our weekly wrap-up. High Pulp is a jazz band driven by innovation, their new album Days in the Desert will be released via Anti on July 28. “Unified Dakotas” is our latest look into the album, a groovy minimalism swells just enough to blow your mind but not out to orbit, the free-flowing nature of the track keeps you grounded through this whirlwind of bright melodies.
Robert Finley – “What Goes Around (Comes Around)”
Black Bayou
Despite obstacles that would put anyone else’s creativity to a dead stop, Robert Finley simply funnels his life through his art. The legendary bluesman is back with a brand new LP, Black Bayou will be released by Eye Eye Sound on October 27. “What Goes Around (Comes Around)” is our lead single and it is everything we could hope for, Finley’s gruff voice over an arrangement inspired by muddy swamps and thick southern heat makes for an unforgettable moment.
James Blake – “Big Hammer”
Playing Robots Into Heaven
Much like the title of his latest single suggests, James Blake is swinging for the fences with his latest release. “Big Hammer” is the lead single for Blake’s upcoming Playing Robots Into Heaven album which will be released on September 8. This single features no vocals from Blake, replacing his usual sentimentality with wonky synth chords and a guest vocalist who brings the whole track to life.
Jon Batiste – “Calling Your Name”
World Music Radio
After years of crafting music that implements elements from across time and genre, Jon Batiste is finally basking in his own success. His 2021 LP garnered nothing but positive reviews and Batiste is wasting no time following up on his triumph. World Music Radio is the ambitious 21-song LP set to be released on August 18, “Calling Your Name” is the sinfully sweet first single. The song finds solace in pop tendencies, a bubbly instrumental drives the innocent lyrics. A simple but undeniably fun look into Batiste’s next steps.
Slow Pulp – “Slugs”
Yard
The time has finally arrived for Slow Pulp to descend from their mountain top and deliver their sophomore effort. Yard is set to be released on September 29 and will follow up Slow Pulp’s impressive 2020 debut album. “Slugs” is our latest look into Yard, a distorted ballad driven by chaotic minimalism, a perfect stomping ground for the band’s poetic songwriting and cloud-like harmonies.
The Alchemist – “Midnight Oil” (Feat. Larry June & Jay Worthy)
Flying High
Seeing The Alchemist credited on a new album is always a nice treat, a whole project from the man himself feels like a holiday. Flying High is the latest addition to Alc’s colorful discography and features some of hip-hop’s deadliest wordsmiths. “Midnight Oil” is a stand-out for more reasons than a few, the haunting vocal sample acts as a ghostly backbone for the viscous verses from the two features. We are also treated to a rare verse from The Alchemist himself, putting a ribbon on yet another outstanding outing.
