Miso Extra is a London-based rapper/producer, who sings/raps in Japanese and English. She was in 2022’s coveted First Fifty announcement for The Great Escape, played Pitchfork Festival and shared the stage with Thundercat at Brixton Academy, as well as touring as support to Marc Rebillet. Growing up, she learned how to play the violin and loved to sing, but never envisioned a career in music due to the lack of Asian representation in the industry. It wasn’t until 2020, during the UK’s lockdown, that her project was born.
Check out the delightfully bizarre and viscous new single from Miso Extra, “R10”. Here she flows delicately across the track, on top of a beat supported by circular percussive action and minimalistic droning, displaying unique delivery and an undeniably charismatic tone.
She says of the track: “It’s about exploring the balance between self-confidence and arrogance. The difficulty in practicing humility. The song title is taken from one of the lyrics, ‘R10 level elite, dancing feet’, which is in reference to the footballer Ronaldinho who is famously known as R10 and whose goal celebration was often a dance.”
