LISTEN: Strange Weather Blends Afrobeat & Power Pop Into Melting “Who’s Got The Power”

Strange Weather is the experimental-pop project of singer/songwriter/multi-instrumentalist Sean Brennan. Born outside Baltimore, Brennan began composing for chamber ensembles in his teens. After studying poetry at college, he began working at a studio in his hometown, producing music for television, radio, and theatre. In 2011, he relocated to Brooklyn where he currently lives with his wife. Brennan has been diagnosed with a rare genetic eye disease called Choroideremia, and he is gradually going blind.

Seemingly drawing inspiration from a blend of Fela Kuti, Talking Heads, and King Gizzard, Strange Weather delivers a danceable yet thought-provoking mid-summer jam. Drifting between dreamy, meandering melodic lines and jagged syncopated phrases, “Who’s Got the Power” effortlessly straddles the lines between genres and manages to tastefully borrow from each. Be on the lookout for more tracks from the upcoming album The Fool’s Journey to be released in the coming months.

“This is the 7th song in a concept album called The Fool’s Journey that we’re releasing one song per month. Each song is like a tarot card – an archetype, or a stage of the journey. This song is about power dynamics in relationships. The odd time signatures reflect the power imbalance inherit in relationships, and the Fela Kuti-ness of the song is meant to conjure both the political and primal nature of the drive to take power. And yet somehow, at the center of it all, there’s a very sweet game of keep-away being played: who’s got the power?”
