LISTEN: Portland’s Hoagie Drops Spoon Fueled Indie Rasp On ‘Common Core Kids”

Hoagie is the musical moniker of Portland, Oregon-based singer/songwriter and multi-instrumentalist Dave Holgado. A former big-city lawyer from small-town upstate New York, Hoagie is set to self-release his irreverent debut album “Other Folks” on his own Buncha Bands Records on September 29, 2023.

Other Folks was completed just before the pandemic with the help of producer Joe Michelini (American Trappist) and a bevy of east coast musicians, and mastered by Alan Douches at West West Side Music.

Mouth clicks, and handclaps drive the playful yet thoughtful new folk release from Hoagie. The song seamlessly weaves together aspects of Spoon and recent Jeff Tweedy tunes to create a simplistic ode to days gone by.

“Common Core Kids,” is a contemplative song about generational change written from the perspective of one the older folks being left behind by this change. Though it laments how young folks eschew the wisdom of their elders, and insist on tearing down existing societal structures only to rebuild and reclaim them as their own, it ultimately accepts the inevitability — and even the virtue — of this cyclical phenomenon.
