Composer Basil Poledouris scored many iconic movies before his death in 2006. His work on movies like Robocop, Red Dawn, Free Willy, Les Miserables (1998) and The Blue Lagoon gave life to scenes throughout. His score for the cult classic Starship Troopers is a masterclass in how music can elevate a film’s atmosphere and impact. From the very first note, Poledouris’s composition encapsulates the grandeur and intensity of the film’s futuristic, war-torn universe. With his brilliant use of orchestral arrangements and electronic elements, Poledouris crafts a sonic journey that perfectly complements the on-screen spectacle. Craft Recordings has issued the score on vinyl for the first time with new artwork from graphic novelist, Malachi Ward. Also included is a fold out poster with the artwork that appears on the front and back of the jacket. Besides the normal black vinyl, there is a “Blood & Bug juice marble” edition limited to 500 copies.
One of the standout aspects of the score is its ability to mirror the film’s multifaceted themes. The opening theme, with its majestic brass fanfare and soaring strings, captures the sense of heroism and patriotism that permeate the society depicted in the movie. At the same time, the score doesn’t shy away from darker undertones, seamlessly integrating brooding undertones and suspenseful motifs that underscore the perils faced by the characters. The way Poledouris blends traditional orchestral elements with electronic sounds is a stroke of genius. By using synthesizers and electronic percussion, he adds a futuristic and otherworldly quality to the music, reinforcing the sci-fi setting and technological advancements depicted in the film. This fusion of acoustic and electronic elements creates a dynamic and immersive sonic landscape that draws listeners deeper into the movie’s world. From the rousing battle sequences, characterized by thundering percussion and frenetic string work, to the poignant moments that allow for introspection, Poledouris’s composition adapts seamlessly to the film’s shifting moods. The emotional depth he infuses into tracks like “Klendathu Drop” and “They Will Win” captures the camaraderie and determination of the characters, resonating long after the credits roll.
Starship Troopers wouldn’t be the same without Poledouris’s musical contribution. His ability to underscore action, suspense, and emotion with equal prowess demonstrates his deep understanding of storytelling through sound. The score’s distinct themes and motifs weave themselves into the fabric of the movie, enhancing every scene they accompany. Fans of the film should definitely add this to their collection as it is both an excellent vinyl pressing as well a testament to great movie composition.
