LISTEN: Luke Beling Brings Arresting Storytelling On “Pain Like A River”

South African-born singer-songwriter, Luke Beling, grew up listening to music from the 60s and 70s, influenced by records his father played and the surrounding struggle of his native country. Beling believes music should embody both the miracle and labor of life.

Beling’s latest single, “Pain Like A River”, is a powerful and heavy track that sucks the listener in with arresting storytelling and intriguing dynamic swells. Constantly alternating between airy, stark verse and lush, building choruses, Beling handily steps into the role of the artist by creating beauty out of tragedy. “Pain Like A River” is the second release from Beling’s upcoming debut full-length album.

“One of my friends lost his son in a horrific tragedy some time ago. I remember feeling so hopeless and heavy for him, imagining the impossible-to-describe-difficulty of taking a breath or getting out of bed, strangled by life-shattering pain and an impossible-to-remove weight of nihilism. I wrote Pain Like a River reflecting on this tragedy. My hope is that all our suffering, small or great, will one day come to an end,” says Beling.
