SONG PREMIERE: Lynn Drury Gets Outside with Folk-rock Anthem “Live My Life”

Lynn Drury has been performing, in one arena or another, her entire life. At the ripe old age of five, she won a 4-H state competition in Mississippi in pole bending; pole bending is a little like barrel racing,. That’s horse talk. In a word, rodeos. Once you know that much about Lynn, you understand her approach.

She picked up the guitar at 26, went at it like a pro, and she’s never stopped working. Her inspiration is her environment and since the late nineties, that environment has been New Orleans. The transition for the Yazoo City native Drury was smooth. She says jasmine smells like honeysuckle, and you believe her. Sultry, sweet songs turn funky, and it’s all in the same neighborhood.

These days, Lynn herself is part of the scenery, calling her unique sound “NOLA-MERICANA.” An Award-winning songwriter with a voice distinct, this is definitive New Orleans Americana created in a city that moves to its own groove. She’s been a regular at French Quarter Fest and New Orleans Jazz & Heritage Festival for years, and has played just about everywhere in town.

Today Glide is excited to premiere her new tune “Live My Life,” an aptly-titled folk-rock anthem that finds Lynn making a lyrical statement about our current moment when we all spend way too much time looking at screens and not experiencing the real world. Lynn’s easygoing yet lively vocals and harmonies are complemented by a steadily building rock beat soaked in reverberating guitar. While the song might not hit you as being distinctively New Orleans, the vibe and message is one that definitely resonates in one of the best places to get out and interact with strangers and have a fun time living in the moment.

Lynn describes the inspiration behind the song:

The song “Live My Life” sprung up last year, before we went into the studio. It was born out of a frustration of being cooped up inside and sitting in front of a computer, and also, the anxiety of reintegrating with my community. I was always a social person in New Orleans, going out and going to clubs, listening to my friends. Yet, I found myself and I witnessed in others, that pull to retreat back to safety, so to speak, back to the comfort of home. We’ve all gone through a lot, so this is a way of “shaking it off,” I guess. I think it comes across how me and the band were all vibing organically, too. They hit it out of the park!
