Footballers That Have Dabbled in the Music Industry

Although they are known more for dribbling skills than singing skills, some footballers have tried to dabble in the world of pop music… and some have even had a little bit of success.

When we look through the Champions League odds today, we see names of footballers… and consider only their talent on the pitch – however, some of them have talents off the pitch as well and can even hold a tune!

Here we look at a few famous football icons that have tried to score – a top 10 hit!

John Barnes

Good old John Barnes – he has to be on the list. The former Liverpool and England midfielder may have been a bit of a magician on the pitch – but he showcased his musical prowess with a standout performance in New Order’s legendary track World in Motion.

Not known for his operatic vibrato, he was given the rap section in the song – which was released for the 1990 FIFA World Cup and became an instant hit. Barnes’ rhythmic verses, filled with his famous enthusiasm and flair, were sung by audiences worldwide and left a huge mark on the song’s success. To many, his contribution to this song wasn’t just a footballer’s cameo but an actual display of genuine musical talent – and it earned him admiration and respect from both football and music lovers. Barnes’ rap remains one of the most iconic and memorable aspects of football’s musical history.

Emile Heskey

Emile Heskey could be a controversial footballer… some more assured of his talents on the pitch than off it. However, whatever your opinion of his footballing skills, he did venture into the music scene with a unique and somewhat unexpected contribution.

He appeared in a remix version of the British band Kasabian’s hit single Club Foot – and this collaboration saw Heskey featuring in the song’s music video, where he showed off his football skills while grooving along to the track’s rhythm. Although this wasn’t necessarily a traditional musical performance, his cameo in the video did add a very entertaining twist, blending his football prowess with the band’s music.

As well as being fun to watch, it also provided a memorable moment for his fans, showing a bit of a different side to his personality beyond the pitch. Although not a musical hit in the conventional sense, his involvement in the music video has still left an amusing impression in the world of football and music.

Rio Ferdinand

Glory, glory Man United! Rio Ferdinand, the former Manchester United and England football star, has demonstrated a real love of music beyond the football pitch. Although he hasn’t been a recording artist himself, he has displayed his musical talents through collaborations and appearances.

He memorably appeared in a music video for So Solid Crew’s track “Haters” alongside other footballers. As well as this, the Red Devil has often shared his love for music through his social media platforms – often sharing his playlists, checking into various music events and showing support for various artists.

Although he isn’t necessarily known for creating music hits, his involvement in music-related events and appearances has definitely showcased his interests beyond the world of football- and he has fans in not just the sports world, but the music world.

Manchester United

Manchester United, one of the world’s most iconic football clubs, has, as a team, been intertwined with music beyond its sporting life. The team’s famous anthem, Glory Glory Man United, has long been an enduring fan favorite – a rousing song that perfectly captures the spirit and history of the club, echoing through the stands at Old Trafford on match days.

The club has also had some of its players showcase their musical talents. For instance, in 1976, a couple of their players joined together for the single We All Follow Man United. What’s more, there have been a number of musicians… fans of the club, who have composed songs to celebrate the club.

Although not every footballer’s foray into the pop world achieves widespread acclaim, their efforts can really resonate with fans who love seeing their favorite players doing something a little different.
