Back in 2016, folk group Big Thief released their debut album Masterpiece, a bold name for a first outing but they weren’t wrong. Over the years the songs of their debut continue to cut deep with their emotional vulnerability and raw aesthetics. Today (December 8), Big Thief has released a remastered version of Masterpiece along with launching a karaoke YouTube channel. The new reworking of Big Thief’s debut is available everywhere now and can be purchased on a stunning pink vinyl here.
Thanks to the good people at 4AD, Big Thief’s debut has a new shiny coat of paint to parade around in. The album was originally recorded in 2015 at an old house the band converted into a studio space. The band has evolved so much over the years so going back to listen to their unique sound in its adolescence makes their newer releases feel all the more impressive. Lead singer Adrianne Lenker reflects on the band’s debut, “the masterpiece of existence, which is always folding into itself, people attempting to connect, to both shake themselves awake and to shake off the numbness of certain points in their life. The interpretations might be impressionistic or surrealistic, but they’re grounded in simple things.”
