We’re back and we’re coming back swinging. Yes, it is the first Caustic of the new year and we hope you missed us as much as we missed you. It is safe to say that the part we all missed the most was waking up to the sun sneaking through your window and your phone abuzz with great new releases. Initially, we were going to wait until next week to bring Caustic back but after seeing the surplus of exciting releases, we couldn’t wait any longer.

Check out Glide’s picks for the best new music of the week. Happy New Year!

Youth Lagoon – “Football”

Single

The off-kilter pop project of Trevor Powers, Youth Lagoon returns after 2023 saw them release their best album yet. “Football” follows in the nimble footprints of Powers’ last LP. With a slight twang, the haunting beauty of their vocals floats over simple drum patterns with dense yet lush textures.

SLIFT – “Weavers’ Weft”

ILION

The buzz around this new SLIFT album could outdo a beehive, and rightfully so. The singles for the band’s ILION LP, set to be released on January 19 via Sub Pop, have been nothing short of mesmerizing journeys through the middle ground of metal and psychedelia. “Weavers’ Weft” is our third single and it might be the best one yet. Larger-than-life percussion crashes over heaven-sent harmonies for juxtaposing textures that come to life during this nine-minute odyssey.

David Nance & Mowed Sound – “Mock The Hours”

David Nance & Mowed Sound

David Nance’s latest offering is a self-titled effort set to be released on February 9. On this lovely Friday, Nance gave us the lead single to the upcoming project. “Mock The Hours” is a jangly americana track with enough personality to go around, a real honky tonk track to take you into the weekend.

Katy Kirby – “Hand to Hand”

Blue Raspberry

For the final single from their upcoming album, Katy Kirby saved the best for last. Blue Raspberry is set to be released on January 26 and of all the singles from the LP, “Hand to Hand” is in a league of its own. The syncopated arrangement allows Kirby’s vocals to leap from one melody to the other, an exploration of free-ranging sonics.

Alice Merton – “run away girl”

Single

The newest single from singer/songwriter Alice Merton is brimming with pop tendencies that explode into danceable melodies. “Run away girl” is the first we hear from Merton in 2024 with more new music hopefully right around the corner. If it sounds anything like this single, we’re in for something special from Alice Merton this year. The pop structure fits her vocal tones perfectly as she navigates a bouncy arrangement with ease.

Charley Crockett & Willie Nelson – “That’s What Makes The World Go Around”

Single

The cross-generational country duet we’ve all been waiting for, the great Charley Crockett teams up with the legendary Willie Nelson for a fantastic new single. “That’s What Makes The World Go Around” has a touch of outlaw country in it while still sounding modern. The pair navigates a simplistic yet powerful arrangement with stunning vocals and infectious melodies.

Nathalie Joachim – “Ki moun ou ye”

Ki moun ou ye

Haitian-American singer and composer Nathalie Joachim is returning with a brand new LP on February 16 and if you haven’t listened to their past release, now is the time to get familiar. The title track acts as our lead single and it is a refreshingly mystical journey through wind and string instruments as Joachim croons over the controlled chaos of this composition.

The Last Dinner Party – “Caesar on a TV Screen”

Prelude to Ecstasy

If you haven’t heard the buzz around The Last Dinner Party’s debut album, you’ve been living under a rock. Prelude to Ecstasy is set to be released on February 2 and it is not a party you want to be late for. Our latest single, “Caesar on a TV Screen”, is an epic odyssey of a single that refuses complacency. The band navigates a plethora of tones and melodies for a wildly entertaining single from one of the most exciting bands of 2024.

Liam Gallagher & John Squire – “Just Another Rainbow”

Single

It is a supergroup for the ages on paper, but no one knew what to expect when Liam Gallagher and John Squire announced they were teaming up for a collaborative album late last year. Today, we receive the first single from the duo and it is safe to say, we’re impressed. “Just Another Rainbow” is lined with fantastic guitar work and soaring vocals that deliver some fantastic songwriting to our ears. Whatever their album ends up sounding like, we’re officially excited.

Erick the Architect & George Clinton – “Ezekiel’s Wheel”

I’ve Never Been Here Before

The highly-anticipated debut album from Flatbush Zombies producer/rapper Erick the Architect is shaping up to live up to the hype and then some. Every single has had a different flavor and the album’s latest release continues that trend. “Ezekiel’s Wheel” as The Architect navigates psychedelic guitar tones as he spits breathless verses that sting like a scorpion while staying criminally smooth. I’ve Never Been Here Before is set to be released on February 23, mark your calendars.

Butcher Brown – “Down With the King”

Single

The most restless jazz band in entertainment is back with a homage to hip-hop royalty. “Down With the King” references and samples the classic Run-DMC LP with Butcher Brown injecting their uniqueness into the classic track. The arrangement is full and bright while the verses are delivered with a baritone gusto.
