When The Eyebrows couldn’t firm up scheduling at their favorite studio, the studio’s owner and in-house producer—longtime producer and trusted friend Mitch Easter (REM, Let’s Active)—suggested they try recording themselves. The Charlotte, North Carolina-based rock n’ roll band did just that, and they still found time to record with Mitch at Fidelitorium Studio in Kernersville, NC.
The resulting album, Double Take, the trio’s third album, is a unique concept record where one repertoire of music is tracked and mixed in two vastly different ways. Side One features polished studio tracks recorded and mixed by Mitch. Side Two was tracked at The Eyebrows’ practice space, and it was produced and mixed by the band’s primary singer-songwriter Jay Garrigan. This side features raw and meaty recordings reminiscent of the live b-side cuts you might have heard on early REM albums. The entire album was mastered by Bill Skibbe (Jack White, The Kills, The Black Keys) at Third Man Mastering in Nashville, TN. Double Take will be preceded by the anthemic single, “Say Yeah!”
The Eyebrows are singer-songwriter, producer, guitarist, and multi-instrumentalist Jay Garrigan; bassist and vocalist Darrin Gray; and drummer and multi-instrumentalist Shawn Lynch. The band solidified in 2018, and the three-piece band is an extension of deep friendships and telepathic musical chemistry.
Today Glide is excited to premiere the video for Double Take’s leadoff single, “Say Yeah!” an anthemic rocker replete with chugging sleaze-rock guitars and slashing powerchords in the verses. Indeed, this tune feels straight out of 70s glory daze with its turbo-charged vocals, delicious soaring harmonies, and ballsy guitar bravado. Fans of Big Star, Foghat, and Cheap Trick will absolutely flip over this tune, and the grainy footage of the band jamming in a field brings to mind those keg parties at the moon tower. The song is inspired by the ’80s movie, Heavy Metal, and its soundtrack, which resonated with Jay’s 11-year-old self. Lines like, You say Yeah ’cause you’re from outer space, Spread your wings and save the human race, pay homage to the movie’s energy and attitude. The fun and exclamatory lyrics here deviate from Jay’s usual introspective style, and they represent a call to action, urging you to let go of whatever holds you back. “It’s about shedding inhibitions and embracing the experience,” Jay says.

Quote from Jay Garrigan:
What causes a person to scream out the word “Yeah!” in jubilation? What kind of feeling is that exactly, and how could I write a song to help people feel that way? “Say Yeah!” is a frenzied leap into just plain feeling good… something I don’t entirely feel comfortable with! Picture this: I wanted to write a guitar riff so potent, so electrifying, that I desired that it would cause people to spontaneously give each other high-fives! This track, it’s an unapologetic, full-throttle dive into the kind of euphoria that makes one forget about how hard and difficult life can be. It’s a stab at grabbing a slice of good times.
As for me? This song is like dancing on the razor’s edge of my own bipolar tempest. It captures the manic high where you’re king of the world, but you’re eyeing the precipice, wondering just how close you can dance to it without tumbling over. Recording and performing “Say Yeah!” was/is like mainlining adrenaline; it’s intoxicating, but not heady, and in retrospect, maybe a tad reckless. But that’s what rock-n-roll is all about! And the way we laid this track down? Picture our drummer, with his own Beatle boot heels drumming against the floor like a heartbeat, echoing the stomp of an unseen crowd. And Mitch Easter, the wizard behind the console, turning dials and weaving magic… the recording session itself felt like a group of friends on a sacred mission… to taste a glimmer of the rock-n-roll truth.
