Berlin and London-based artist Cassie Kinoshi’s new album Gratitude is a heartfelt ode to the everyday moments that spark joy and appreciation. Kinoshi, a modern jazz-fusion artist with a Mercury-nominated band, seed., underscores humility through the album’s lowercase presentation, mirroring her approach to music and life. Drawing inspiration from her own life and her mother’s practice of noting daily gratitudes, Kinoshi weaves a tapestry of sounds that celebrate the beauty in the ordinary. This album stands out not just for its musicality but for the underlying message of mindfulness and mental health awareness that Kinoshi champions. The live recording captures the essence of Kinoshi’s vision, where around sixteen players contribute to a sound that’s both pre-composed yet rich with improvisational spirit lending towards a cinematic quality. This blend of tight arrangements and rhythmic freedom showcases Kinoshi’s adeptness in balancing structure with spontaneity, making Gratitude a testament to the cohesive power of jazz.

Gratitude unfolds like a series of musical vignettes, each capturing a unique emotional landscape. The opening track, “i” sets a contemplative tone, inviting listeners into a reflective space where melody and silence share equal importance. The music here is introspective, with subtle shifts in dynamics hinting at deeper undercurrents of emotion. As the album progresses, the energy shifts towards more vibrant and uplifting compositions. One piece might evoke the feeling of a brisk morning walk, where the crisp air and golden sunlight invigorate the soul. Another track could resemble an urban dance, its rhythms mimicking the hustle and bustle of city life, yet maintaining a certain grace amid the chaos. Kinoshi’s saxophone work is a highlight throughout, offering narratives without words. In some moments, it’s tender and whispering, drawing listeners closer; in others, it’s bold and celebratory, a call to embrace life’s joys. The ensemble, with its rich tapestry of sounds, supports and expands upon these themes, allowing for moments of individual brilliance within a collective harmony.

The album’s nuanced arrangements reflect a deep reverence for jazz traditions while pushing the boundaries into new territories. From the introspective opening track to the uplifting finale, “Smoke in the Sun,” Gratitude invites listeners to pause and reflect on their own sources of gratitude. With Gratitude, Kinoshi proves that jazz can be a powerful medium for storytelling and emotional expression. It’s an invitation to find beauty in the mundane and celebrate the simple moments that bring us joy.
