At The Drive-In’s ‘In/CASINO/OUT’ Gets Record Store Day Vinyl Reissue (ALBUM REVIEW)

In/CASINO/OUT, the sophomore studio album by post-hardcore band At The Drive-In, released in 1998, stands as a pivotal moment in the underground music scene of the late 90s. Recorded live to capture the raw energy and intensity for which the band was renowned during their live shows, the album offers an unfiltered glimpse into their dynamic and frenetic sound. In/CASINO/OUT hasn’t been pressed on vinyl since 2012, something that will be rectified this Record Store Day. As part of Craft Recordings RSD selections, In/CASINO/OUT will receive a limited-edition Purple & Green smoke on clear vinyl pressing.

The album kicks off with “Alpha Centauri,” a track that immediately sets the tone with its aggressive guitar riffs and Cedric Bixler-Zavala’s impassioned vocals. The band’s ability to blend melody with chaos is evident throughout the album, particularly in tracks like “Chanbara” and “Pickpocket,” where the interplay between Omar Rodriguez-Lopez’s inventive guitar work and Tony Hajjar’s powerful drumming creates a compelling sonic landscape. Lyrically, In/CASINO/OUT is cryptic and filled with vivid imagery. Bixler-Zavala’s poetic approach to lyrics adds layers of depth and mystery to the songs, inviting listeners to delve into the narrative complexities. The standout track “Napoleon Solo” is a prime example, offering an emotional punch that resonates through its storytelling.

The production, intentionally raw and unpolished, contributes significantly to the album’s charm. The decision to record live, eschewing the polished production common at the time, allows the band’s energy and spontaneity to shine, capturing the essence of their live performances. This approach, while potentially alienating some listeners, is a testament to the band’s commitment to authenticity and serves to amplify the emotional intensity of the music. In/CASINO/OUT hits that perfect balance between the lo-fi production of their debut, Acrobatic Tenement and the more produced sounds of their massively popular third album, Relationship of Command.

In/CASINO/OUT is not just an album but an experience. It embodies the spirit of post-hardcore with its blend of aggression, melody, and emotion. It’s a testament to At The Drive-In’s creativity and their pivotal role in shaping the genre. While it might not possess the polished accessibility of mainstream records, its raw energy, complex lyrics, and dynamic compositions make it a seminal work that continues to inspire and resonate with fans of the genre. As with the band’s status itself, who knows when this record will be pressed again. The sound on this repress is great; definitely worth picking up this RSD.
