LISTEN: Lonely Benson Rejuvenates With Bedroom Bossa Track “My Happiness”

Under the moniker Lonely Benson, originally from Australia, Dan Young has built a unique musical identity that blends early Bossa Nova, vintage jazz, and ’60s rock. After releasing hits like “Strawberry Afternoons” and his self-titled album, he faced personal challenges, including mental health and substance use issues. His 2022 song “The Old Days” reflected personal growth and preceded a hiatus focused on guitar skills, recovery, and well-being.

Rejuvenated, Lonely Benson is back, creating music he calls “bedroom bossa.” His recent track, “My Happiness,” explores the pursuit of contentment with a whimsical, laid-back style. Fans can expect new music monthly as he continues his personal and artistic journey.

The light-hearted nature of “My Happiness” is juxtaposed with the longing of the lyrics. Young is in search of something special. His journey is accented by playful guitar chords and subtly groovy drums, a soundtrack to a hero’s journey. The simplicity of the arrangement allows each element to feel attention-demanding. “My Happiness” is not head-spinning the same way a frantic metal song might make you feel. You’re in a whirlwind of calming melodies and meditative thoughts, combining a distinct approach to modern lo-fi rock. Lonely Benson created an immersive listening experience on “My Happiness.” There is a natural beauty that radiates from sunset-tinged musicianship that shapes this infectious single.

“I recorded this in a cabin in the mountains, a hundred-and-something-year-old colonial house in Nashville, and my small bedroom home studio,” explains Young on his new single. “Lyrically, this track explores the idea that happiness often finds us when we least expect it, especially when we stop chasing it. Something I still grapple with!”
