LISTEN: The Beach People Pull Surf Rock Strings On Fierce “Oh No!”

“Our goal is to amass a discography of music about the beach and the ocean over the course of our lives so that when we are old, we can look back and laugh. Along the way, we hope to become some people’s favorite secret band,” explains The Beach People. The landlocked surf rock trio from Denver, Colorado, pride themselves on the escapism of their music and their “just for kicks” attitude. Their new album, Love and Peace at Chi Chi Beach, builds upon their already existing discography with more of their signature carefree and wacky sound.

The Beach People pull the loose feel of surf rock and set it to the tight structures of punk. “Oh No!” is a crashing single with frantic vocals over a chaotic arrangement that still manages to evoke the warmth of a Summer’s sun. The band found the middle ground between two different beach cultures. There are the tourists who flock to the beaches during the warm months, represented by carefree melodies and nonchalant lyrics. Then there are the locals of a beach town who have cultivated their own art scene and crowd into the basement to see their favorite local act play; the band nods to those who stay during the off-season via neck-breaking tempos and complex rhythms. The Beach People release a rock fusion track with palpable energy on “Oh No!” The single showcases the band’s deep-rooted love for surf rock while experimenting with the limitations of the genre.

“‘OH NO!’ Should be played loud for full effect. This song is what scatterbrain sounds like. We wrote all the music and lyrics to this song together,” explains the band. “Our approach is to write from our own experiences but then imagine that we are sexy, cool, and good at surfing. The last step in the creative process is to ask ourselves does this make me feel how I felt when I first heard ‘Rock Lobster.’ If the answer is yes, then the song is done.
