Thomas’ new single, “Between a Steeple and a Satellite,” is a good old-fashioned folk rocker tune brimming with the artist’s refreshing perspective. Toying with convention, Thomas questions the world around him over a twangy arrangement that boasts rolling pianos and vibrant guitars. There is an innocence in the vocals that juxtapose the dark and haunting questions that drive the narrative of this toe-tapping confessional. When a song is based around asking questions, there is typically a longing in the vocals that emphasizes the confusion of the artists. Rather than stay downtrodden, Thomas finds peace in asking questions. “Between a Steeple and a Satellite” explores dark topics with a smile and solace. Thomas is able to live comfortably among the bright hues of the instrumentation as he finds his place in the universe while keeping a keen eye on the questionable.
“This was one of those songs that was written start to finish in half an hour with a pen and paper, just singing a melody out loud as I wrote the words,” explains Thomas. “I wanted to write about the idea of tiptoeing between scientific and spiritual beliefs in trying to understand the unanswerable. You can spend your whole life trying to make sense of everything around you just to watch it all flash by. On one hand, it’s this enormous thing to be alive and a part of this universe — and at the same time, such a small, insignificant thing. Grappling with that and how those views change over time is what inspired this.”
