His latest release, ‘JPEG RAW’, and his latest concert in Boston at the MGM Music Hall on June 7th proved it. Sure, he can shred with the best of them, delivering gut-wrenching solos that leave you speechless. Still, in Boston, Clark Jr. showcased his mastery of multiple genres, creating a dynamic and unforgettable performance.
When Gary Clark Jr. emerged, the venue erupted. He wasted no time, diving headfirst into a searing set beginning “Maktub” that showcased his exceptional skills. His guitar work was nothing short of phenomenal, weaving between bluesy riffs and scorching solos with effortless precision. His vocals were equally impressive, delivering a soulful growl that perfectly complemented the music.

He ripped through “When My Train Pulls In,” a masterclass in blues guitar work, while seamlessly transitioning into newer, funk-infused tracks from ‘JPEG RAW’. Highlights included the soulful “What About the Children” and the electrifying “This is Who We Are”. The band deserves recognition too. Tight and professional, they provided the perfect foundation for his improvisational flourishes. The energy between them was palpable, creating a cohesive unit that drove the music forward.
The setlist was a perfect blend of Clark’s blues roots, rock influences, and contemporary flair. He effortlessly transitioned between slow, soulful ballads and high-octane rockers, keeping the audience captivated throughout. Gary Clark Jr. proved once again why he’s considered one of the most exciting guitarists of his generation.
