LISTEN: Kwolek’s “Some Evenings” Touches The Soul While Exploring The Depths of Rock

Kwolek was raised in suburban New Jersey on 70s, 80s, and 90s alt/glam/disco/new wave/goth/punk/grunge/shoegaze/indie with a deep undercurrent of world cinema, internet culture, and art. He currently lives in Boulder, Colorado. He used to tour in a band called Lima Research Society but now focuses exclusively on solo studio work. Most of the vocals for “Some Evenings” were recorded in an earthship in Taos, New Mexico, though the rest of the song was made in a closet in his apartment.

Kwolek combines moments of soft rock with explosive garage rock influences in his unpredictable and captivating single “Some Evenings.” What starts as a moving, slow jam explodes into a head-nodding ode to looking for something more while understanding personal desire. The collage-style single has the artist maneuvering through multiple rock subgenres while stringing them together via soaring falsettos. Kwolek’s poetic songwriting anchors these frantic tempos down to earth. His vivid imagery and palpable longing make “Some Evenings” feels relatable and present despite the crashing drums and mesmerizing guitar work. Kwolek’s “Some Evenings” is a poetic outing that sets the heavy emotions of pining for more to an avalanche of varying tempos and styles for a moving performance.

“I pull from a lot of disparate sources. ‘Some Evenings’ combines the narrative storytelling of Richard Dawson with the frank sexuality of Prince filtered through Nirvana-ish grunge,” explains Kwolek. “My songs take a long time to gestate—if I get bored with something, I abandon it or make it weirder. Thus, ‘Some Evenings.’ (And its b-side, “Pink Places,” which I started in 2015 and found on an old hard drive a few months ago.)”
