LISTEN: Burnt Rises With Deep Reggae Grooves On Swayin’ “Gualala” feat. Karmic Basis

Burnt music is a psychedelic and soulful blend of reggae, ska, punk, and hip-hop sounds. Inspired by the DIY artist subculture, this California-based band has independently produced 13 albums of original music. Originally formed in 2003, BURNT continues to tour extensively on the west coast of the U.S. and Canada.

Deep grooves from the Reggae history books welcome you to BURNT’s “Gualala.” The single from their upcoming project captures the breezy feel of reggae while fearlessly blending it with mesmerizing hip-hop verses from guest artist Karmic Basis. The beautiful fusion of these two worlds allows BURNT to showcase their diversity as musicians while sticking to their roots. This is a song that is entirely without ego. BURNT steps to the side to allow Basis to deliver head-spinning flows, but their work on the chorus is equally captivating. The blaring yet warm horns accent the effortless vocal feel of the hook for jaw-dropping harmony work. BURNT is preparing what sounds like a landmark release for the reggae/ska outfit. “Gualala” is infectiously fun with its quaint vocals and laid-back tempos, but the lyrics tell a more profound tale.

“Gualala” feat. Karmic Basis is featured on Burnt’s 2024 album Sol Connector, which was funded by a successful Kickstarter campaign and recorded using solar power at Oz Farm on a remote part of the Mendocino County coast in northern California. The song embodies the Burnt sound, combining elements of reggae and hip-hop in a way that is both unique and classic. During the development of the new album, the band gathered for several songwriting sessions on the Mendocino coast, during which the idea for “Gualala” emerged as a sort of homage to our journey together as musicians and dedicated friends. “Gualala” is a reflection of how far the waters that form the river of our music travel to come together.”
