With July typically being the hottest month of the year in most places, it’s a great excuse to blast some good old-fashioned American desert rock. Also known as the “Palm Desert Scene”, the genre came to prominence back in the 90s thanks to stoner-rock legends Kyuss, whose lead guitarist Josh Homme went on to start a band called Queens of the Stone Age in 1998, and the rest, as they say, is history. And while QOTSA never really tried to compete with the crushing/low-end heaviness that often characterized Kyuss, as most folks know, Queens can certainly rev it up in an entirely different manner when they want to. A case in point is this star-studded performance of “Song for the Dead” from Werchter back in 2002, which features the one and only Dave Grohl behind the kit and the late great Mark Lanegan on the mic. Dig it:
