Phish’s concert at Dick’s Sporting Goods Park in Commerce City on August 29, 2024, marked the beginning of their highly anticipated four-night run (13th year), which has become a Labor Day weekend tradition for the band and its dedicated fans and the night opened with an electrifying performance of Talking Heads’ “Cities,” setting the tone for an evening of classic Phish jamming and intricate improvisation.
The first set featured a mix of fan favorites and deep cuts, showcasing the band’s versatility and musical prowess. Notable highlights included a seamless transition from “Down with Disease” into “Ghost,” where Mike Gordon’s bass lines and Trey Anastasio’s guitar riffs intertwined beautifully. The band was clearly locked in, delivering a tight, energetic performance that kept the crowd engaged.
The second set was a masterclass in jam band dynamics, with extended versions of “Pillow Jets” and “Harry Hood” that allowed each band member to shine. “Pillow Jets,” in particular, stretched over 23 minutes, evolving through multiple phases of improvisation that ranged from delicate soundscapes to intense, fiery peaks. The set closed with a triumphant “Harry Hood,” with Trey extending the outro to display sheer joy and connection with the audience.
Phish’s return to Dick’s Sporting Goods Park reaffirmed why this venue is one of their most cherished. The band’s chemistry was on full display, and the energy from the crowd was palpable. The encore, “Say It To Me S.A.N.T.O.S.,” was the perfect sendoff for the night, leaving fans eagerly anticipating the remaining shows of the run.
