Weirdo Wednesday: In 1994 Beck Was True Pop Antithesis – Watch “Wedge” Live

Continuing our spotlight on Riot Fest this week, does anyone else remember when Beck was weird? In fairness, you’d be forgiven if you’ve forgotten, especially considering the dude has effectively been in full-on popstar mode since the release of 2017’s Colors. But back when Beck first burst onto the alternative-rock scene 3 decades ago with his distinctively eccentric, acid-fried classic debut album Mellow Gold, he was the antithesis of pop at the time. Granted, thanks to the success of the slacker-rock anthem “Loser,” he shot to superstardom with the quickness, but Beck was nonetheless coming from a legitimately warped/anti-commercial headspace at the time. Case in point is this rare performance of the super obscure “Bogusflow” from 1994, a song that takes a not-so-subtle jab at mainstream music and how lame it tends to be. Here’s hoping Beck still has a few of his trademark weird tricks up his sleeve this weekend. Make Beck Weird Again? Now that’s a slogan we can get behind:
