LISTEN: Curl’s “Christopher Robin” Blends Explosive Post-Punk With Lush Shoegaze

Curl is an Ottawa Post-Punk duo consisting of Brandon Turner on Guitar and Vocals and Andrew Lacelle on the drums. Curl has been playing in the Ontario punk and emo scene since 2018, playing shows with Single Mothers, Chastity, Pkew Pkew Pkew and more. Since their single “Kurt” in 2019 and their east coast tour in 2020, the band released their first single back, “Barbara Stanwyck on August 2nd; now they are releasing a second single, “Christopher Robin,” which was released on August 30th, along with the announcement of their second EP The Burning Smell of Silver Nitrate releasing on September 20th, 2024. Half of the songs on the EP were produced by Michael Watson of Club Records (member of Fanclubwallet, Chemical Club, Neurotypes, and more), and half was produced by Stefan Jurewicz of Kick Me Records (producer of Elementals, All Day Breakfast, and more).

“Christopher Robin” is a ripping take on modern post-punk with searing guitar tones and otherworldly vocals. The dense arrangement, which features neck-breaking tempos and nuanced guitar work, gets a plush feel when the aggressive yet distant vocal performance cuts through the noise. The band used Sheogaze-style mixes to soften the blow of the throat-scratching vocals, breathing new life into the typical jagged vocals associated with modern post-punk. The band is able to capture the essence of the burgeoning scene without sounding like a carbon copy of it, allowing them to toy with tropes from other rock subgenres to land on the head-spinning sonic landscape of “Christopher Robin.” Only a restless sense of creativity can force such a daring sound, and Curl fearlessly dives into the lofty vision to emerge with a familiar yet alien song like this fantastic new single.
