Weirdo Wednesday: Things Get Creepy With “In Heaven (Lady in the Radiator Song)” From David Lynch’s ‘Eraserhead’

When thinking about some of the most surreal and disturbing movies of all-time, David Lynch’s 1977 cult-classic film Eraserhead can’t help but come to mind. One might argue it’s essential viewing this time of the year, not only because of its distinctly bizarre nightmare imagery, but the score alone is often enough to send chills up your spine. Indeed, the markedly foreboding soundtrack (composed by David Lynch and Alan Splet) only helps accentuate the artfully twisted nature of the film itself. Perhaps the most subtly creepy example is “In Heaven (Lady in the Radiator Song)”. Much like the concept of “heaven” in general, the song is seemingly comforting/sweet on the surface, but considering the context, it comes across as profoundly chilling/sinister. “In heaven, everything is fine…” Is it?
