By this time in October, chances are you’ve noticed a palpable chill in the air at some point as we head into the home stretch of the season of the witch. This is especially true for those of us from northern latitudes, where things can get downright “frosty” this time of the year.
Take Switzerland for example, a country largely known for its stunning mountain scenery and distinctive cheese, true, but for us metal fans, it’s also synonymous with Celtic Frost, who hailed from Zurich and helped put Swiss metal on the map back in the 80s. Not only that, but they also proved to be hugely influential in the development of black/death metal worldwide when they first hit the scene with the release of their classic Morbid Tales album back in 1984. They would expand their sound in more avant-garde/extreme directions on subsequent releases (which included a widely panned attempt at mainstream appeal on their Cold Lake album in 1988). But being that as it may, it’s hard to argue they ever topped the delightfully dark and powerfully primal thrash found on their debut, as this killer performance of “Into Crypts of Rays” from 1984 aptly demonstrates. Turn it up and feel the Frost!
