Tuesday’s Gone: Typo O Negative’s Peter Steele Brings Goth Metal Prowess On “Christian Woman”

With only a couple of days left until Halloween, if you haven’t started already, it’s not too late to start indulging in some (debatably cliché) bands often associated with this time of the year. Some of those bands are also really good, regardless of the season. Chief among them for this writer is Type O Negative, who were led by their infamously sardonic/towering late great frontman/bassist Peter Steele. And for those of you out there who may not be fans per se but might have at least been a little Type O-curious over the years, we can think of no better entry point into the band’s delightfully dark catalog than their magnum opus released back in 1993: Bloody Kisses.

The first proper song on Bloody Kisses is the mesmerizing “Christian Woman,” which is a bit of a gothic mini-opus in its own right. Divided into 3 distinct sections (“Body of Christ (Corpus Christi)”, “To Love God”, and “J.C. Looks Like Me”), it’s not only widely considered to be Type O’s best song (with apologies to the arguably more infamous “Black No. 1”), but one of the greatest goth-rock songs ever composed. Marinate in the original full-length video of “Christan Woman” and see for yourself. R.I.P. Peter Steele.
