Gilad Bogner is an American/Israeli singer-songwriter and guitarist. Brought up in a religious Jewish home (no longer religious himself), his family moved to Israel when he was seven, and in his early 20s, moved back to the States to pursue a music career.
His trip back to the States has been far from fruitless as Bogner’s “Venice” puts a brightly colored bow on his nuanced fusion work. The single feels like a celebration so grand the sunrises before the party bear any resemblance to an end as blaring horns accent explosive crescendoes and confetti-style keys. While the busy arrangement provides enough excitement to get lost in, Bogner’s soaring vocal performance is not to be overlooked. Seemingly swaying along with the jazzy swing of the piece, the artist’s vocals tread over the noise with a quaint yet dominant presence. Even with the sweet tones and gentle melodies, Bogner’s vocals are powerful and urgent, a testament to his range and songwriting abilities. “Venice” captures that moment when spring turns to summer, and everything seems brighter. By toeing the line between infectious pop and swinging funk, Bogner landed on a sun-drenched sound that is captivating and refreshing.
“The song ‘Venice,’ in my mind, was my way of finally addressing my frustration with a person I cared deeply about and making fun of myself in the process,” explains Bogner. “‘No dentist could fix the cavities you left in my heart’… it’s pathetic, but I guess that even the pathetic parts of myself are worth addressing, loving and even nurturing at times.”
