SONG PREMIERE: The Mallett Brothers Band Hit Hard With “Nothin’s Working” Off New Album ‘Higher Up In The Hills’

In terms of New England Americana-based songwriting sensibilities with a touch of Steve Earle workmanship, it’s often seldom to find something with that gracious Middle America touch; The Mallett Brothers Band, though, should be on everyone’s radar. Their rollup-the-sleeves gritty yet melodic sound arriving from Maine echoes with a powerful Springsteen populist anthemic bravado and authentic musicianship. The Mallett Brothers Band has built a dedicated following through relentless touring and genre-defying authenticity, sharing stages with artists like The Turnpike Troubadours, Blackberry Smoke, and Lukas Nelson & Promise of the Real- a date on a future Farm Aid roster is surely soon due.

The five-piece is back with a new album titled Higher Up in the Hills on April 5th, 2025 and Glide is premiering the lead single (below), Nothin’s Working.” The track originated in an unexpected place – songwriter Will Mallett’s dreamscape – marking the first time in his career he’s pulled a complete song from his subconscious.

“This song is sort of about trying to fill a void. I got the chorus from a dream, and it was catchy enough that I felt like I needed to finish it, so I kind of followed where it led and wound up with this theme of how external stimuli will never really do the job. On the surface, it’s a love song, but I feel like it’s really more about grief and loss in general and the diffuse sense of longing that drives all of our human activities,” says Will Mallett.

The Mallet Brothers hold nothing back on the track, and the song appears to reach the subconscious of those seeking good or comforting fortune in 2025.

“When I was writing this song, I had the impression that I wanted it to be something that a female pop singer could sing. Obviously, Taylor Swift is the queen of catchy choruses, and we’re big fans of hers in my household and the whole state of Maine is also really proud of Amy Allen, a fellow Mainer who’s become one of the most successful songwriters in the world – like, four Grammy nominations this year if I’m not mistaken. I wouldn’t compare this song to any of theirs, but I was using their work as kind of a North Star to aim towards when I was working on it, in terms of trying to create something that could maybe live in a universe other than my own, and not imposing boundaries around it based on my own little world,” explains explains Will Mallet of The Mallet Brothers about his latest song.

The time is now for The Mallet Brothers to celebrate a national breakthrough, and their road with Higher Up In The Hills seems destined to make 2025 an impactful year.
