Melbourne’s beloved alternative rock outfit, Society of Beggars, has unleashed its new album, Levitator, on November 28. This release follows their acclaimed 2017 EP, An EP Called Night, and represents a powerful evolution in their sound. Society of Beggars creates an immersive musical experience that melds primal rock riffs with deep emotional resonance.
Like a strong wind waking a lonesome tree atop a hill, Society of Beggars’s “All the Houses Have Their Lights On” is a slow-burning ballad that pushes and pulls the listener’s emotions. A stand-out from their recently released LP, the single captures an enticing juxtaposition that will have you running to hear more from the alt-rock provocateurs. Jangly guitars collide with Earth-shaking drums, and deep and rich vocals are greeted with soaring and lighter backing harmonies. It is a complex yet digestible piece of modern rock that scoffs at conventions and finds solace in challenging genre norms. Society of Beggars is just getting started, yet “All The Houses Have Their Lights On” showcases their veteran presence. The poetic songwriting swirls around the hectic yet honed arrangement, creating a whirlwind of musical prowess to get lost in.
“For me, the song is about being struck down by grief, and how sometimes that can seem like a cataclysmic event, and the eeriness of that, not being able to sleep whilst the whole world stops around you,” explains the band.
