In the summer of last year, Glide had the pleasure of speaking with Mike Frazier about his Secrets of Atlantis LP. The album, released in August of 2024, saw the artist diving into his psychedelic rock influences with fearless creativity, emerging with eight songs that proved his range as a writer and musician. With the new sonic shift, Frazier’s life took an even more drastic turn. The Virginia-born, Seattle-based multi-hyphenate was diagnosed with Mesial Temporal Lobe Epilepsy with hippocampal sclerosis, a chronic brain disorder that causes seizures. “One day after my surgery, I was moved from the ICU to the neurology unit of the hospital. My surgeon came to check on me and told me the surgery was a success. After giving me that news, he followed it up with, ‘And also, I listened to your music throughout the whole procedure, and I loved the songs. You sound a lot like Neil Young,’” Frazier explained in our 2024 feature.
With Secretes of Atlantis and the surgery in the rearview, Frazier is courageously pushing forward. Today, Glide is proud to premiere “April Days,” the lead single and title track from Frazier’s seventh album, which is set to be released on April 25. The waltz-style ballad showcases yet another side of Frazier’s artistry. His soulful vocals soar over an arrangement between sugary and dreary. This is not the Frazier we heard on Secretes of Atlantis. He sounds more confident and hopeful, and overall, Frazier sounds present. “April Days” feels like Frazier’s way of letting us know he’s feeling better and happily returning to what he loves.
“I started writing this song in my hospital room while I waited for brain surgery,” explains Frazier when asked about the creation of “April Days.” “My friend Mark Masefield (Dave Hause, Will Hoge) came to visit me with his wife Katie and our friends Jasmine and Moy, and Mark brought his accordion to my room. I was able to write most of the song while he played along at my bedside.” That sense of community is palpable in Frazier’s latest single. What could be mistaken for a longing in his voice is more so a choked-up gratitude, an overwhelming emotional barrage that could render the most stoic man a puddle.

“[April Days] is undoubtedly a record made out of necessity for Frazier to heal from brain surgery,” explains Stephanie Bruno, who wrote the album’s back cover. “The record is the listener’s avenue to dive deep into Frazier’s psyche through his physical and mental suffering, the strength in the pain of healing in all forms, and applying it to the world.”
