Clad in a brown suede tuxedo jacket with a black peak collar and five-button surgeon’s cuffs, the legendary Stanley Jordan graced the stage at 118 North in Wayne, Pennsylvania, on February 2nd, 2025, with a performance that was both a retrospective and a revelation. Forty years after releasing his groundbreaking debut album, Magic Touch, Jordan showcased his signature two-handed technique and boundless musicality, captivating the audience with a blend of jazz, classical, and pop influences. (He also hinted at an upcoming announcement to celebrate the anniversary of Magic Touch.)
The evening began with a captivating set by vibraphonist Angelo Outlaw and his trio. His unique blend of mallet percussion and electronic textures created a mesmerizing soundscape and groove that perfectly set the stage for an evening of musical exploration and innovation.
As with all of his performances, Jordan’s set served as a demonstration of virtuosic guitar wizardry. His uncommon technique allows him to create intricate melodies, harmonies, and rhythms simultaneously: it’s almost like his right hand is playing what Joe Pass’ left might have, were they playing in a duo. Jordan effortlessly moved between genres, seamlessly blending jazz standards with original tunes and contemporary and classical pop hits. Highlights included a soulful interpretation of Rod Temperton’s “The Lady in My Life,” popularized by Michael Jackson, and a stunning rendition of Mozart’s Piano Concerto No. 21.
The most endearing moments of the evening came when Jordan’s daughter, singer/songwriter and entrepreneur Julia Jordan Kamanda, who lives within driving distance of the venue, joined him for two songs. The father-daughter duo showcased their musical connection, creating a sense of warmth and intimacy that resonated with the audience and adding a personal touch to an unforgettable performance. As Stanley celebrates 40 years of Magic Touch, he continues to inspire and amaze, demonstrating that he remains one of the most unique and influential guitarists of our time.
