Son of the Velvet Rat divide their time between their home in Graz, Austria and Joshua Tree in California’s high desert. Their songs reflect a sonic landscape stretching from the Old World romanticism of Jacques Brel or Fabricio de Andre to the visionary realm of American balladeers like Bill Callahan or Michael Hurley. Lechner hails from Vienna, Austria, where, aside from helming Ghost and the Machine, he is a much-in-demand session guitarist.

Today, Glide is offering an exclusive premiere of the new tune and video for “Inland Empire,” the first song to be released from the band’s upcoming Red Barn Sessions that pays a posthumous homage to legendary director David Lynch. While borrowing the title from a Lynch-movie it sets out to explore the mysteries and capture the eerie undercurrent of life in the artificial paradise of Desert-Suburbia. Over a eerie black and white footage that capture the scenery of the California desert communities, the song is a work of reflective gothic Americana filled with soft-spoken vocals and sparsely beautiful instrumentation. What makes this song special is how it feels filled with warmth and melodicism, with lyrics that are as striking as they are simple.
