Weirdo Wednesday: The Pogues Flex Their Wordly & Weirdly Musical Muscles With “Turkish Song Of the Damned” Live 1986

While The Pogues’ music always sported an undeniably Irish flavor, the band’s sound often proved more versatile than many gave it credit for. Indeed, Shane MacGowen and company were not afraid to experiment with more worldly styles at times, as evidenced by songs like the Latin-tinged “Fiesta” or the Middle Eastern influenced “Turkish Song of The Damned”. The latter of which is the case study for this week’s Weirdo Wednesday, as “Turkish Song of the Damned” (which was inspired by the band “The Damned”) stands out as a distinctly peculiar offering in The Pogues catalog. It’s almost got a bit of a Zappa influence going on, but whatever the case, it finds the band flexing their creatively worldly muscles in a compelling fashion. Dig it:
