LISTEN: Nu Epoque’s “Messin’ Around” Is Groovy Neo-Soul With Infectious Melodies and Jazzy Undertones

Nu Epoque is a Barcelona-based band founded by Simonal Bie, singer and beat-maker of Mozambican origin, and Leonardo Cincinelli, Italian pianist and producer. Their story begins at the emblematic jazz bar Jamboree, where they meet and start experimenting during the Jam Sessions, creating various projects together. The result of this union is a unique world of sounds in which the electronic beats blend naturally with African polyrhythms, giving space to the melodies and lyrical poetry of Monica Mussungo, a charismatic singer from Angola. Her incorporation into the band leads to the production of the first album.

“Messin’ Around” is the intro track to Nu Epoque’s 2017 LP Zula and introduces the trio as modern fusion experts. The infectiously groovy single blends nostalgic funk, classic soul, and contemporary dance in an undeniable yet unassuming fashion, giving the song its unique textures and unforgettable melodies. The subtle minimalism that echoes throughout allows every nuanced element to enter your ears and make its way down to your dancing shoes, and before you know it, you’re engulfed by the band’s energy. The vocals blanket the colorful arrangement in a palpable warmth that ties all of the sonic leaps and mood changes together beautifully. For a song with plenty of melodic and dynamic movement, “Messin’ Around” never sounds over-produced. Nu Epoque eases the listener into their lofty yet honed vision of modern neo-soul, yet it never sounds like they’re sacrificing ideas to make their sound more digestible. “Messin’ Around” introduces Nu Epoque as fearless fusion masterminds with the ability to craft radio-ready singles while exploring new territories.

“This one is special to us because it came out of our very first jam session together. We met with Monica, the singer, Simonal on the MPC, and me on piano and synths, and we just started jamming,” explains Cincinelli. “Maybe that’s what makes it feel so fresh! For me, the song also strikes a great balance between electronic production and the improvised details on piano, creating a dynamic and organic feel.”
