The Los Angeles quartet Fime—guitarist/vocalist Beto Brakmo (he/him), bassist/vocalist Maxine Garcia (she/her), drummer Eric Promani (he/him), and guitarist/vocalist Scott Leahy (he/him)—first formed their chemistry as the backing band for Jay Som’s Melina Duterte before collaborating with her on their debut album, 2022’s Sweeter Memory. The band looks to establish their sound even further with a new album set to be released in 2025.
With an already-established and unique sound, Fime looks to take over 2025 by releasing their latest single, “Better Half of A Dollar.” The searing and dense performance finds the band penning relatable and poetic lyrics delivered with throat-scratching screams over a bed of neck-breaking drums and blistering guitar melodies. Fime struck a balance between nostalgia and their vivid visions of modern rock on this one. The tempos and attitude evoke the feeling of fresh post-punk while staggering melodies hint at more modern experimentation. In “Better Half of A Dollar,” Fime explores the struggles of financial instability and the dreadful realization that nothing in life is free. The single captures that moment a paycheck hits your account just for it to be thrown at bills, rent, and the ever-looming beast of societal pressures. “Anesthesiologist cash my check just help me sleep through it,” bellows Brakmo about halfway through the song. This line begins to sum up the frustrations Fime is getting off their chest on this single as the band aims at the uneven wealth distribution and how it hurts more than it helps. “Better Half of A Dollar” is thrashing hardcore punk for modern times and introduces Fime as no-nonsense artists with the prowess to carry their important message.
