Tyler Childers Kicks Off On The Road Tour At New Orleans’ Smoothie King Center (RECAP)

Long before the genre celebrated its recent boom back to the top of popular music, Tyler Childers was already moving the genre into a more experimental phase. The multi-faceted, Kentucky-born prodigy has been building a discography of daring twang since the 2010s, and miraculously, the artist shows no signs of slowing down. Childers will spend most of 2025 on his On The Road Tour, which officially got underway at New Orleans’ Smoothie King Center last night (April 3). Coming off the release of his 2023 LP, Rustin’ In The Rain, Childers sets out on an expansive tour of the States with a career-spanning setlist.

Childers touched on just about every release of his already storied career on the first stop of his 2025 tour. He kicked things off with the title track to his 2019 release, Country Squire; he also performed “All Your’n” and “House Fire” from this LP. The 20-song setlist primarily focused on Childers’s landmark 2017 album, Purgatory. The artist performed a total of six songs from the LP, making it the most visited album of the night. Childers pulled out the title track, hits like “Whitehouse Road,” and B-sides like “Universal Sound.” The rest of the setlist finds Childers bouncing from one release to the next, performing at least one tune from every album besides 2020’s Long Violent History. The artist dug deep to pull out tunes like “Nose on the Grindstone” and “Shake the Frost,” balancing these deep cuts with fan favorites like “Bottles and Bibles” and “Way of the Triune God.” Childers also stepped outside of his discography for a few moments during his New Orleans stop. The artist covered Hank Williams’s “Old Country Church” and was joined by S.G. Goodman, who opened the show, for a duet of her song “Space and Time.”

‘With the first night in the books and a sprawling setlist, Childers’s On The Road Tour is officially underway. The modern country icon is heading to North Little Rock, Arkansas next before making his way to Oklahoma City, Raleigh, and Jacksonville. The tour also has Childers stopping in Los Angeles, New York City, and Nashville. You can check out the full setlist and tour dates here.
