doubleVee is delighted to self-release EP Periscope at Midnight on July 25th. Produced by Allan and Barb in their home studio, it was co-mixed by the pair and Wes Sharon of 115 Recording, with Wes handling the mastering. Allan performed vocals, guitars, bass, and drums/effects programming, with Barb performing vocals and synths. Guest performers include violinist Brent Williams and trumpeter Christi Wans.

doubleVee launched in 2012 when Allan Vest and Barb [Hendrickson] Vest began creating music together, noting how their musical backgrounds complemented each other. The pair married in October of 2015 and went on to release their debut album The Moonlit Fables of Jack the Rider on February 10, 2017. The concept album follows the story of the title character, with his tales being told in a theatrical style with Jack at the handlebars.  He’s a traveler who descends into a world reminiscent of The Twilight Zone where nothing is exactly as it seems, with pieces of his history unfolding over the course of the album.

Their follow-up EP Songs for Birds and Bats was released April 12, 2019. The five-song release concluded with Last Castaways, selected the next year to be featured on the soundtrack for the immersive video game Beyond Blue. On July 15th, 2022, doubleVee released their album Treat Her Strangely, nine new songs whose conception began during the height of the pandemic. Later that year the sixth track, Your Love Is It Real?, was included in episode seven of season one of Tim Burton, Alfred Gough, and Miles Millar’s Netflix series Wednesday.

Today, Glide is offering an exclusive premiere of “Submarine Number Three Vee,” the duo’s re-imagining of “Submarine No. 3,” the opening track off Allan’s 2000 Starlight Mints album The Dream that Stuff Was Made Of. With bright, edgy guitars and dreamy harmonies, the song is an infectious work of singalong orchestral power pop. In true doubleVee, the song is sort of a duet with Barb Vest offering fun vocal counterparts to Allan’s bouncy lead. The choice to add strings in the backing instrumental gives the song a rich orchestral dramatic tone that seems to complement the video’s aquatic theme.

Barb Vest describes the process behind the animated video:

We decided to create an animated video for it featuring Grant Fuhst’s artwork for the single, including his amazing musical submarine. We stumbled on the Adobe Character Animator app and used it to create our characters and other scenes. We had a blast working on it and enjoyed learning more about the animation process as we created a storyline for the song.

  1. Wow! Love this from start to finish. The song is catchy and clever, and the video is just so fun. Great use of metaphors throughout, juxtaposed against the submarine theme that allows the incorporation of the sea creatures, rolling waves and water – the immersion of the characters. Great job, doubleVee. Thanks, Glide, for bringing it out.
